A few thoughts about the show. (For more information about Carlos Castaneda, see this 1973 Time Article.)

Knowing who said something can have a large influence on whether we believe it to be true. The context in which information is given to us and the associations we make with it can change our perception of its importance and validity.

Carlos Castaneda is thought of by some as the grandfather of spirituality, by some as a teacher and guru, and by others as a fraudulent cult leader. It’s widely believed that his works are to a certain extent fictionalized, yet he always insisted that his books written from his real experiences, making Carlos Castaneda a man of great debate.

How do our pre-conceived notions of Carlos Castaneda impact our willingness to learn from his writings and to accept his teachings as truth? If his works are fact, are his teachings true? If his works are fiction, are his teachings false? If one doesn’t believe in spirituality or alternate realities, is there anything of value in Carlos Castaneda’s writing?

We are so excited to announce out next season!

Season 7 at Single Carrot Theatre

A Beginner’s Guide to Deicide
By Qui Nguyen and Robert Ross-Parker

A comically blasphemous adventure.

Badass Catholic schoolgirl Lucy travels to the ends of the earth to complete her simple but urgent mission: she has to kill God, and fast. With her reluctant sister in tow, she meets some epic and familiar faces, transgresses some major boundaries along the way, and realizes that this journey of a lifetime may be her last.

Regional Premiere.

The Flu Season
By Will Eno

A darkly comical look at love from one of America’s best and strangest writers.

When a man and a woman meet in a hospital, love blooms; or does it falter? Only their nurse and doctor know for sure, but they’re too self-absorbed and ridiculous to tell us. Will our lovers see spring blossom together, or will the weight of an unwieldy world fracture them forever?
The Prologue doesn’t know, and The Epilogue isn’t telling.

The Memorandum
By Vaclav Havel
Translated from Czechoslovakian by Paul Wilson

A comical workplace classic about the perils of standardized communication.

Company President Mr. Gross receives a memorandum but can’t read it because it’s written in Ptedype, the newly invented language to which all correspondence must adhere. If he can’t figure out what it says, he’ll lose his job and certainly his mind. This satirical take on bureaucracy and office malarkey is an incisive look at 20th century socialist Czechoslovakia, but it could just as easily be today’s America.

Sketch Comedy
By Single Carrot Theatre

A high-octane laugh explosion from the company that brought you Slampooned! and Sects and Violins.

After plotting and planning for years, Single Carrot Theatre is bringing the next great sketch show to Baltimore. We’re taking inspiration from the boiling-hot writers’ rooms of classic comedy shows and crashing that energy into the spectacle that makes Single Carrot Theatre a prime spot for theatrical innovation.
World Premiere.

The Apocalypse Comes at 6pm
By Georgi Gospodinov

A beautiful series of interwoven stories about the nature of humanity in transition.

Peek inside the minds of people standing on the precipice of what could be the apocalypse. It could be scary, it could be loud, but it could just as easily be a whisper. Will the earth shift, or will we just quietly close our eyes and pass from one world to the next?
National Premiere.

*Stay tuned for more info on dates, memberships, and tickets*

Beginning Saturday, April 6, 2013, 11:00 AM

Nathan A. Cooper.

Students will be lead through the process of creating an artistic Etude, based on the concept of actor as creator. These etudes will be inspired from personal research and exploration. We will give you the tools you need to express yourself in the way you want, and you’ll grow as an artist and person in the process.

Bring water, movment clothes and an open mind to help bring yourself new heights.

Classes are held on Saturdays: 4/6, 4/20, 4/27, 5/4, & 5/11

Classes meet from 11:00am – 1:30pm at

Single Carrot on Charles 1727 N. Charles Street Baltimore MD 21201

Nathan, what do you think students will gain from this course?

This class will explore the actor as the center of the creative process, using physical exercises and methods as a way to develop and create etudes. Students will be pushed to think about theatre in a new way, and will gain valuable insights along the way.

Why do you think training physically is essential for an actor?

Being in good phyiscal condition and having awareness and control of your body is essential as an actor, because our bodies are our instruments and we want to keep them in top shape.

How important is having fun in physical training? What makes it fun for you?

Having fun while training makes it all worth while. If you aren’t having fun, you might as well be at the gym. Going through this training with a group makes it fun, the shared experience will help you reach new levels as a performer.

Friday March 22
Saturday March 23

Kaddish, culling its name from the Jewish prayer of mourning, is a stage adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning, Hungarian writer Imre Kertesz’s novel, Kaddish for an Unborn Child. Kaddish is an exploration of ritual, loss, and unrelenting inner conflict in which the beleaguered central character mourns the absence of the child he never fathered during his failed marriage; his mantra being a refusal to bring a child into a world where horrors like the Holocaust can occur. As he attempts to reach the final Amen of the Kaddish, he weaves a brutally honest, deeply personal, stream of consciousness web of the unseen casualties of war, political corruption, Jewish identity, and the humor of living. Kaddish is the first ever staging of this magnificent novel, an eloquent meditation on human vulnerability and strength told through the eyes of a survivor of Hitler’s “Final Solution.”

The performance is 55 minutes long.

An interview with director Barbara Lanciers:

What inspired you to take on this project? My grandmother, Ilona Boros, left Hungary in 1944 and eventually made her way to the United States. I always thought of my grandmother as a nice lady with a pretty singing voice who had a funny accent and made funny food; this was my connection to my Hungarian roots. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-twenties that my grandmother pulled out a photo of her as a young girl in an elaborate costume very clearly in the midst of a performance. She told me, “This is why I think you love the theater so much. You inherited it from me” That is how I found out that, as a girl, my grandmother was in training to be an opera diva and was part of a well-known children’s theater troupe, Aldori Basci (Uncle Aldori) in Budapest.

Shortly after this revelation, I moved to Baltimore, entered the MFA Theatre Program at Towson University, met Philip Arnoult (Director of the Center for International Theatre Development), and traveled to Budapest for the first time. This introduction to Hungary occurred in 2005; I traveled there to conduct research for the creation of a production based on my grandmother’s escape from Hungary as an eighteen-year-old girl during the last days of World War 2. (This piece was called Leaves with a Name and premiered at Creative Alliance in 2007).

It was on that trip that I walked into the English language bookstore of the Central European University and saw an entire section devoted to the works of the Hungarian, Nobel Prize-winning author, Imre Kertész. I had heard of him but had never read any of his writing. Because I was in the midst of a somewhat archaeological search into my grandmother’s history, and because I was trying to understand as much as I could of the context of her childhood in Hungary, I bought three of Kertész’s novels: Fatelessness,Liquidation, and Kaddish for an Unborn Child. I read Kaddish first. It changed my life. Never before had I read such brutally honest, powerful, lyrical prose. I devoured the short novel in one sitting and then pulled out a sketch pad and immediately began dreaming about what I would do if I was ever able to stage it. Of course, in my dream I saw my friend and talented performer Jake Goodman playing the protagonist. From the beginning I knew it had to be Jake.

What is important about producing Kaddish now? How is it relevant to current events?

In Hungary’s 2010 election, a center right political party, Fidesz, won with a two-thirds majority. This gave them an unprecedented level of power, and the Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has become quite a sensation within the EU and in the international media for swiftly eroding the checks and balances necessary for a healthy democracy. Paul Krugman of the New York Times has been giving a lot of blog space to his Princeton colleague and constitutional law expert Kim Lane Scheppele on the subject. She is perhaps, in my opinion, the most eloquent writer on the subject of this new era of Hungarian politics: http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/12/guest-post-the-fog-of-amendment/?smid=fb-share

Here is a recent story in the New York Times on the situation in Hungary: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/12/world/europe/12iht-hungary12.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0

For artists in Hungary, this political tension and upheaval is creating a crippling climate. The New Yorker recently printed an article in which Imre Kertész is specifically discussed in relationship to this constantly shifting landscape: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2013/01/the-hungarian-crackdown.html

I have family in Hungary and am a proud Hungarian. After my 2005 trip, I made several additional research trips for the creation process of Leaves with a Name. I lived in Budapest on a Fulbright Scholarship in 2007-08. I have been traveling to Hungary at least twice a year since 2008. Hungary is my second home, and I am greatly concerned. As an artist, what can I do? I can put the words of the most incredible writer I have ever read, whose work is so timely and so important in this very moment, on the stage and introduce him to as many people as possible. This is why I am staging Kaddish now.

What is your relationship to the famous novel, and how did you adapt it for the stage?

If one is going to stage a novel written by Imre Kertész, one needs permission from both Imre Kertész and his translator, Tim Wilkinson. Through a series of angels I met in New York, I was able to make contact first with Imre’s wife, Magda Kertész, and then Imre himself. The Kertész’s have been nothing but supportive of this project from the beginning. They too want Imre’s voice heard by as many audience members as possible, as does Imre’s translator and dear friend, Tim Wilkinson. These are three incredible people; I am so grateful for their trust and generosity.

Imre Kertész has very specific requirements when staging his work. No adaptations are allowed. You must not add to his words or rewrite them in any way. You can edit as far as taking out sections of text and re-ordering the text that remains, but that is the only manipulation allowed. And he has final approval of the edits. This is the process Jake and I went through as editors of Kaddish for an Unborn Child into Kaddish for the stage. We worked closely with Imre and Magda to achieve a final version everyone agreed was most in line with the heart of the novel. So, Kaddish is a 55 minute piece that includes a little less than half of the content of the novel. It is an abridged version. But the words are all Imre Kertész.

As far as the staging is concerned, people will have to come see that for themselves…

I was in Budapest two weeks ago, and a dream came true: I met Imre and Magda Kertész. Six days after that incredible meeting, my beloved grandmother passed away. It is deeply moving to me that Jake and I will be mounting Kaddish in Baltimore just days after saying my final goodbye to my grandmother. She was the initial inspiration for this piece, so it only seems fitting. On opening night this Thursday, after Jake and Imre take us on an incredible journey, I will be saying kaddish for Ilona Boros. These three performances at Single Carrot are dedicated to her.

Harley Newman: Theater of Danger

Friday, March 15, 2013

8:00 PM

Tickets: $15 or $10 students, artists and wizards

“A cerebral romp through what makes us human!”

“Legendary performance artist!”

“Human Oxymoron!”

At birth, doctors wondered if Harley would survive. They still do. In his evolution from circus clown to something else, he has pushed the boundaries of stunt, and is the only person ever to be recognized with Lifetime Achievement awards for performance in both sideshow and escapes.

Harley pushes limits. He walks barefoot on sharp swords, dances in broken glass, and clears his sinuses with a high-heeled shoe! He swallows swords, uses his tongue to stop fans and pick locks, and escapes from a straitjacket while riding a unicycle!

His television appearances include The Today Show, The Tonight Show, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, and Penn & Teller’s Sin City Spectacular, and have been viewed by approximately a billion people. Harley has repeatedly taken his unique art form to ever further extremes, entering into territories thought to be impossible. He was rejected by the Guinness Book of Records as “too dangerous to publish”.

Join Harley on the knife’s edge bridge between the universe inside his head and the world outside. Each step leaves you wondering what could possibly happen next!

This show is presented as part of Single Carrot Theatre’s Second Series.

Seating is very limited for this ONE NIGHT EVENT

During the season planning process, we carefully consider which shows will play best side by side so that you, our...

During the season planning process, we carefully consider which shows will play best side by side so that you, our guests, will have the most meaningful and thought-provoking journey as you join the Carrots at each step along a season. The Tropic of X was originally scheduled to play third in our season lineup, but was moved to play second after we moved out of Load of Fun this last fall. In life, sometimes the best things are results of happy accidents and even though Tropic of X was intended for another slot in our season, its current place has offered a new connection to the season. As we began rehearsals, I found some unexpected connections to our previous show Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? by Caryl Churchill, a play that explores American imperialism and its inevitable backlash.

Our upcoming play, Caridad Svich’s The Tropic of X, is set in a not too distant future in the Polyglot-Americas where North, South, and Latin America have become something of the same place. It’s a world of swiftly changing regimes, rodeo arcades, cheap sex-tourism, and constant change. It’s a true melting pot where our characters are constantly looking for their next thrill, their next fix. And what I found upon first read was Svich’s wildly fascinating imagination and keen knack for the poetic. But more than simple experimentation with imagery and language, Svich brilliantly presents the current real world scenarios that could lead to the creation of a real world Tropic of X.

Take, for example, Hugo Chavez who came to power as the President of Venezuela in 1999 and has almost singlehandedly ushered a revolution across Latin and South Americas. His primary influence is Simón Bolivar, an 18th Century Venezuelan revolutionary who fought across the continent to wrestle back independence from Spain. Chavez, who frequently refers to his efforts as a continuation of the Bolivarian Revolution, finds philosophical allies in the presidents of his neighboring countries Argentina, Bolivia, Columbia, Guatemala, and Paraguay. All share the common goal of gaining independence from foreign involvement.

The countries involved in the New Bolivarian Revolution, those I listed above, have made great strides in gaining true independence from foreign meddling. In the coming years Latin and South American countries will continue to gain strength and a greater ability to throw political weight against the USA in the global arena. There are even hopes of forming some sort of Unites States of South and Latin America (USSLA).

Imagine what would happen if this was realized and the USSLA had equal footing with the USA. Would the USA view this as a threat? Would we allow the United States to be on equal footing with our southern neighbors? Or might we try to destabilize the progress to secure our interests?

Svich paints poetic realities on the backdrop of these hypothetical scenarios, creating the world in which the characters live. Perhaps true love is the only thing that can save them.

To me, this is the message of the play, and it offers a profound sense of hope.

Nathan A. Cooper.
