All That Jazz
SCT is thrilled to present a new series featuring local Baltimore Musicians and music inspired by Charm City. The ongoing concert program, launching December 9th with the Todd Marcus Quintet, will bring new, vibrant music to the Remington stage, and SCT could not be more thrilled to support art that is relevant both socially and artistically to the city as a whole.
Todd Marcus Quintet: Life in West Baltimore
Friday, December 9th
A 20-year resident and activist in West Baltimore’s Sandtown-Winchester and Upton neighborhoods, Todd Marcus has spent the past year writing new music portraying the challenges and strengths of his community, and the beauty of both. While much of the New Jersey native’s work has focused on his Egyptian heritage and incorporating Middle Eastern influences in his music, the bass clarinetist and composer drew particular inspiration from the death of fellow community-member Freddie Gray, seeking to translate the tension and unrest that followed into one of Baltimore’s oldest and proudest art forms: jazz. Marcus debuted the composition with a five-day East Coast tour in September and will further its development in performance at SCT.
