What is theatre? If not an expression of ourselves and our community.

How did we engage our community?

  • Site Specific Theatre.

SCT chooses venues that enhances the audience experience and activate underutilized spaces. This may be through pre-show engagement, where the audience sits, how they enter the space, or even actual participation during the production—whatever form it takes, patrons are invited to give more than passive attention, and we hope they leave with more because of that. We have performed in historic mansions, churches, bars, vacant storefronts and even people's backyards.

  • Empowering Education Programming.

We believe access to the arts is a right, not a privilege. Single Carrot Theatre’s work onstage and in the community grows from the conviction that participatory cultural experiences facilitate learning and that artistic expression is a form of civic engagement. SCT is committed to creating 21st century learners and fostering desire for learning through theatre.

Over 10,000 young people have participated in education programs offered by SCT, with over 3,500 reached annually. Each year, Single Carrot honors 100% of requests for need-based scholarships, provides teaching artists to area schools, and offers free and low-cost community programs.

  • Community Driven Theatre.

SCT partners with non-theatre and non-arts organizations to expand the experience and meaning of our productions beyond the play itself. SCT aspires to erase the sharp divides between artistic programs and community-engagement and to create new opportunities for theatre to serve Baltimore City and its citizens directly. Some past partnerships have a call to action for our audience to have a greater impact such as seed bomb making workshops with Blue Water Baltimore, walking for the Out Of The Darkness Walk with the Association for Suicide Prevention.

It was a real pleasure to host a weekend of SCT’s production of Every Brilliant Thing. It felt so rewarding to gather community members from around the area, while supporting local theater, all in our own back yard! The SCT team made everything easy and it was great to see just how much work and care they put into each production. If you are considering hosting a production or contributing to SCT some other way you won’t regret it!
